Kansas Registered Agent Requirements: Address and Statute (2026)
Every Kansas LLC must continuously maintain a registered agent, and the obligation begins the moment the Articles of Organization are filed. One vocabulary note up front: the Kansas statutes call this role the resident agent. Same job, different label, and you will see both terms on state forms. The governing law is K.S.A. 17-7925 for the agent and K.S.A. 17-7924 for the registered office.
What K.S.A. 17-7925 Requires
The statute requires every covered entity to keep a resident agent whose office address in Kansas is on file with the Secretary of State. That agent is the company's official point of contact for service of process: when someone sues the LLC, the papers go to the agent, and the state's notices route through the same address. Because the address sits in the public record, anyone can look it up in the business entity database.
Who Can Serve as a Kansas Registered Agent
K.S.A. 17-7925 lists four categories of eligible agents:
- The covered entity itself, meaning the LLC can hold the role in its own name
- An individual who is a resident of Kansas
- A domestic corporation, LP, LLP, LLC, or business trust
- A foreign corporation, LP, LLP, LLC, or business trust authorized to transact business in Kansas

A PO box does not qualify under the Secretary of State's own forms. In practice this means someone must actually be at that address during normal business hours, ready to accept documents in person.
Can Your LLC Be Its Own Registered Agent?
Yes, and Kansas is unusually explicit about it: the first eligible category in K.S.A. 17-7925 is "the covered entity itself." An owner-run appointment saves the annual price of a professional agent, but weigh what it trades away. The address you list becomes public, and for home-based businesses that usually means publishing a home address. Someone must reliably be present during business hours, every business day, which is hard to square with jobsites, travel, or a business that moves around. And a missed service of process does not pause the lawsuit; a default judgment can arrive before you know one was filed.
Changing Your Registered Agent
Kansas handles agent and registered office changes on a dedicated filing, the Certificate of Amendment, Change of Resident Agent and/or Registered Office, known by its letter code as Form ROA. The fee is $30 online or $35 on paper, filed with the Secretary of State's Business Services division. Note that the biennial Information Report cannot update your agent; the report has no agent field at all, so Form ROA is the only path.
